Dear Mr. Hanes,
This is Nate Sloan, a senior at Brown University and head of the Music Department
Undergraduate Group (or DUG). Shep Shapiro got in touch with me concerning the
possibility of your visiting Brown this Spring for a lecture/talk. After checking
out your work and your experience, I am hugely excited about the prospect! Your
accomplishments are impressive in their own right, and I think your visit would be
invaluable as far as introducing students to a career that lies somewhere between
the conventional niches carved into music field. Also, part of what we're trying to
do with the DUG is to create links to Music alumni, and start to get students
thinking and inpsired about life after Brown. So thanks again for offering to come!
As for the details of your visit, Shep mentioned that April might be a good time. We
can work around your schedule to find a date that works. I think that a weekday
afternoon would be desirable, because more students might turn up than on a weekend,
but again--whatever works for you is best. At the bottom of this email is a link to
the music department calendar if you want to see what days are already busy with
events.
As for the format, I was thinking that you could give a public talk, for which would
do a lot of publicity and emailing to try and draw a big crowd (I think your work
will be something people will be really interested in). I was also hoping that you
might also consider scheduling a time that you could meet with a small group of
music concentrators, students looking to go into music after graduation who would be
grateful for personal feedback and advice from you. Let me know if you'd be
interested in this.
Sorry for the long email-I may have gotten loquacious in my excitement. It's a real
privilege to be organizing this event, and thanks once again for your interest!
Look forward to talking with you more,
N
